| I recently got a call from congressman Tom Cole's office saying the President and the First Lady wanted to meet me for dinner. I was to call 888-585-4163 for more infomation. I had no idea why they would want to meet ME, but several scenarios ran through my head, each more grandios than the next. After the initial excitement, I came down to earth and got suspicious. I Googled the number and found a lot of other people had searched on it, presumably for the same reason I did, but there was no information available. Well, I called, and much like the comic above, it was not anything special. The call IS from a congressman, and a dinner with the president is involved. Problem is, it was nothing more than a plea for contributions, made sweeter with the promise of your name in print and a dinner with the president. Not a personal, sit-at-the-table-and-chat dinner, but sitting in the room with 100s of other people. "Think of all the business contacts you'll make," the rep said. Well, I don't have the money to give, so I declined. Anyhow, since other people are apparently wondering what this number is, we decided to put up this little page as a courtesy to our fellow confused Americans. I wouldn't discourage people from calling, because I think some individuals would find it a great way to network and make business connections. But, just don't get your hopes up. It's not anything personal, just business as usual. I do have to laugh, for that brief moment I dreamed that the president wanted to meet me, all I could think was "what am I going to wear?" At least I don't have that to worry about anymore. |
